My wife uses coupons and keeps an eye out for sales - this is not an atypical shopping trip for her - she spent $9.48 to get what normally would have been $50 worth of groceries - that is similar to us having put $10 into an investment, selling it at $62.50, paying about 20% taxes to end up with $50, and then buying groceries with the money. So, really, the first step to investing is not losing money - not spending more than you have to.
